Skin Needling - Collagen Induction Therapy

Skin Needling - Collagen Induction Therapy -  CIT - Micro Needling

Theses are all terms that describe  Skin Needling.

Skin Needling is a minimally invasive skin penetrative procedure which uses a device containing  fine needles for the purpose of puncturing the skin to create a controlled skin injury. This triggers the body to rebuild these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin in the dermis.

The Dermapen is a powered device containing multiple fine oscillating needles  that vertically  pierce the skin without dragging as derma rollers can do.

As we age our bodies collagen production lessens, in fact this cruel phenomenon  starts occurring as young as 25!

Along with our body's genetic and intrinsic ageing progression, environmental and lifestyle choices can also causes extrinsic ageing. The result is premature ageing of the skin. This can be determined by such visible signs as fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, dull, uneven complexion, slackening of skin and loose thin skin and a loss of elasticity.

This treatment, although not the most relaxing, can improve the skins health, texture, tone, firmness and elasticity, reduce pore size and acne scaring, firm the skin and reduce  fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin Needling can be administered on almost any skin and in the case of darker skins it is safer than laser as it does not use heat to create damage to the tissue so there isn't the risk of hyper or hypo pigmentation with needling that there is with laser. Also unlike Laser there is much less down time required, in fact many  people go back to work the next day with only minimal redness upon leaving and full recovery in a matter of 2-5 days

The oscillating needle cartridge is disposable so there is no risk of cross contamination. The device is also adjustable to depth and speed so can be even be used on sensitive and finer areas such as around the eyes. The whole treatment is able to be adjusted to the specific areas of the face to treat each are as needed.

Whilst there is some degree of pain associated with this treatment it can be reduced significantly with the use of a topical anaesthetic cream  which can be applied 30-40min prior to the treatment.

However due to  government regulations  we are no longer allowed to supply this type of product, therefore any client wishing to use a topical numbing cream must purchase and apply this product themselves . We are however able to direct you to our compounding pharmacist to purchase the correct type of topical product  for this purpose.

This medically recognised treatment is most effective when taken as a course of between 4-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. For more severe conditions more treatments are required. Results are accumulative and yearly maintenance is advised for ongoing results

Q: Is skin needling painful?

A: For skin needling to be effective it requires the treatment to go to depths which can cause some discomfort. It is for this reason that the use of a topical anaesthetic is recommended. Areas which have less cushion such as the forehead will feel more than plumper areas like the cheks

Q: How will my skin look after treatment?

A: Skin will  have a mild redness  immediately after treatment much like a sunburn. Some spotting may also be apparent, this subsides usually between 12-24 hrs.  A feeling of tightness is experienced  over the next couple of days and mild flakiness is sometimes  experienced s over the next 24 hours. Slight redness may last 1-3 days but can be covered with mineral make up after 48 hrs from the treatment. Skin is completely healed between 3-5 days

Q: How long does the treatment take?

A: Treatment itself only takes 20-30minutes, however allow another 30-40 min if using a topical numbing cream to take effect prior & a further 20min for post treatment mask or LED light . Roughly allow 90 mins for complete treatment time.

Q: How many treatments do I need?

A: For general freshening 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Skin rejuvenation, fine lines & skin tightening 4-6 treatments are usually desired, spaced 4-8 weeks apart. For acne scaring or sun damaged skin 6-10 treatments are usually expected, spaced 6-8 weeks apart.

Q: When will I see results?

A: Because new collagen doesn't happen over night, you must be patient. You will notice an improvement about a month after your first treatment and friends will comment that you are looking fresher. Many clients report that they can see the difference within a week, however the real results are seen after 4-6 months and are accumulative, so they just get better. You start seeing a noticeable change in skin texture usually by the 4th treatment and results continue to increase with further treatments.

Q: How long do results last?

A: Like all rejuvenation treatments you do need to maintain some amount of upkeep. Your new collagen will continue to improve over 6-12 months and results can last up to 5 years. It is recommended that you do a top up treatment 1-2 times a year to maintain your results and further stimulate the healthy collagen development.

Q: Do I need to use anything at home before?

A: In order to ensure the best results are achieved for your skin  it is advised that you have a good corrective skincare regime, this may include the use of AHA's, Vitamin A and good hydration & sun screen to prepare the skin in the weeks before commencing a course of treatments

In some cases we may recommend a Microdermabrasion treatment a week before your Dermapen treatment to ensure the best results.

You must also cease AHA's for 48 hours prior to treatment and 5 days after to avoid any excessive erythema (redness)

Q: Do I need to use anything at home after?

A: Your skin may feel warm and slightly swollen when you get home, you can use cold compresses to calm the skin.

We will apply everything your skin needs to carry you through to the next morning including a breathable camouflage after treatment to cover any redness.  We will advise you to use specific home care treatments to ensure speedy recovery. Do not use any AHA or BHA for aprox 5 days. Retinol may be used with caution 24 hours after treatment. Sun protection using SPF 30+ is essential after your treatment .

Please refrain from smoking when undergoing skin needling as cigarette smoking damages your cells DNA and restricts collagen growth and does not ensure good healing of the skin tissue.

Hot baths, showers and saunas are to be avoided for at least 5 days. tepid showers are fine.

SPF 30+ must be applied daily to avoid UV damage and to ensure the best results for your skin.
